Description

Museum Het Grachtenhuis is a very interesting museum about the history and architecture of the famous Amsterdam Canal Belt. Het Grachtenhuis (the Canal House) offers a wealth of information about the origins of the canal district and the daily life along the canals throughout the centuries. The multimedia exhibition starts at around 1600 and takes you on a fantastic journey through time. You walk through six sequential rooms where the historical development of the canals is shown. Really cool!

400 years of Amsterdam’s canals’ history caught in one museum

The 17th century Amsterdam canal belt is one of the world’s greatest urban projects. It is no wonder that this area is listed as UNESCO World Heritage since 2010. A visit to Het Grachtenhuis is the perfect way to learn more about the history of this beautiful, characteristic area. The interactive multimedia exhibition of 400 years of history takes you about 40 minutes. There is an audio tour available in eight different languages.

On the ground floor of Het Grachtenhuis you can visit beautiful period rooms, boasting great views on the canals in front of the house and the spectacular garden at the back. In the museum shop you will find gifts and souvenirs, all related to the Amsterdam canals and to Het Grachtenhuis itself.
