Description
Tuschinski is a cinema and is part of the Pathé cinemas. The architectural style is an extraordinary mix of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Jugendstil and Amsterdam School and opened its doors in 1921. The façade and entrance hall are already imposing and worthwhile a visit, but try to see a movie in the main theatre (Zaal 1 or Grote Zaal). It is overwhelmingly beautiful and has a stage, an organ and VIP boxes for two persons.
The façade and gates almost look gothic, and the interior has some great Art Deco, Jugendstil and Amsterdam School features. The theatre underwent substantial renovations between 2000 and 2002, bringing back the old glory of ‘Theatre Tuschinski’, as it was originally named.
Main stream movies and movie premieres
Cinema Pathé Tuschinski has six movie theatres with a total of 1459 seats. The main theatre (Grote zaal) counts for more than half of this total, with 784 seats. Pathé cinema is the biggest cinema company of Europe. In Tuschinski they predominantly show main stream movies. This is also the cinema where most red carpet premieres are held. Movie tickets can be bought online or at the cash desk at the entrance.
A romantic, private cinema experience
For a more romantic and private cinema experience you can book a Loge or Balcony package. This includes the movie ticket, a drink and some snacks. Both packages can be booked for movies in the Grote Zaal (main theatre) that play after 17.00 hours.
Audio tour through Tuschinski on the architecture
This beautiful cinema also offers audio tours throughout the building. During this tour you hear the story, history and architecture of the building and of all the movie stars that have visited this unique and most beautiful cinema of the Netherlands. The tour will take you along beautiful art, stunning Art Deco murals – such as the 18 Art Deco women that were discovered during the renovations – wall decorations of rare wood and marble and to the Moorse kamer (Moorish room) and the Japanse kamer (Japanese room).
If you don’t have time for a complete tour, you can also walk in and have a drink at the bar. It’s allowed to take pictures, but without flash!
