Amsterdam Museumnacht (Museum Night) is NOTHING like the movie ‘A night at the museum’, although there is happening a lot here too. On the first Saturday of November, more than fifty Amsterdam museums open their doors in the evening from 7pm. Some are even open till 2am! Various special tours, exhibitions, music and other activities, as well as the permanent exhibitions can be seen and attended. This event is very popular and busy. So be prepared and book your tickets in advance.
Museum night is overwhelmingly worthwhile
Besides raving about the uniqueness of this event, I would like to warn you that it can be quite overwhelming too. The programme is incredibly comprehensive and you’ll have loads to choose from. On the night itself it can be very busy at some places, so have a few backup plans just in case you cannot enter one of the museums.
That said, Museumnacht tries to do everything to make the night go as smooth as possible. There is a limit on the amount of tickets; the online programme is easily searchable, and they have appointed a few people to create routes in advance. Very easy, although the info on the website is all in Dutch. There is something to do or see for every art form. The Amsterdam Museum Night is a great way to explore the Amsterdam Museums in a totally different way.
Dance the night away at the Museumnacht after party
For those of you not tired at 2am; an after party is held in Transformatorhuis and Westerliefde in Culture Park Westergasfabriek. A ticket for the after party can only be bought in combination of a Museumnacht ticket.
Some practical information
Tickets for Museumnacht can be purchased online. Print off your e-ticket or safe it on your phone. At the first museum you visit, you will get a wristband. this will be your entry ticket for the rest of the evening. Keep your wristband: it will also give you a free (repeat) entry to one museum after Museum Night (till the end of the year). Check the Museumnacht website to read all the conditions and info.
