Description
Sometimes you stumble across a great place by accident. Unfortunately it is not very likely that’s going to happen with restaurant Moes. Not because it is not great…on the contrary! in the case of Moes it is because it is ‘tucked away’ on the busy Prins Hendrikkade, in the basement of De Appel art centre. In short why we like them so much: friendly staff, cool interior made of left-over building material and good, organic and mainly locally produced food.
Organic dining in a very pleasant atmosphere
The Prins Hendrikkade is a busy, far from picturesque, street. It runs in front of Amsterdam CS and goes all the way up to the Scheepvaart Museum. Although the street is not idyllic, it offers a few gems. One of them being restaurant Moes. The restaurant is in the basement of De Appel and is what we would call a ‘pijpela’, a narrow but long space from front to back of the building. The interior is completely created from building material that was found in the neighbourhood. They mainly work with products from the region and that are in season to create delicious, creative dishes in original combinations and with an eye for presentation. Not that it is all arty-farty, highbrow food art. It is good food for a very reasonable price.
Not all their organic food is certified as such
The chef buys his ingredients straight from the farmers. Farmers that he trust and who produce good, honest and organic food. Not all of them have an organic produce label or certification, simply because that would make the products more expensive unnecessarily. Moes also works with suppliers such as: Vleesch Atelier (NL), Iambe (NL) and the Kitchen of the Unwanted Animal (NL).
Four times a year: a delicious dinner of ‘pest animals’
Would you ever expect yourself to eat a swan? Or a race horse, or even a rat? Four times a year, restaurant Moes organises - in association with de Keuken van het Ongewenste Dier (the Kitchen of the Unwanted Animal) - a culinary evening with a 5-course dinner of ‘pest animals’. Let yourself be surprised what they make from animals you would normally not think of eating…AT ALL! Dishes they served up in the past: steak tartare of race horse, roasted swan with filled swan neck, salad of smoked crow filet or a dam square pigeon with spinach.
Very Conscious restaurant with a completely recycled interior
Moes is a very conscious restaurant. Not only do they buy local and seasonal products - they buy them directly from known farmers and suppliers - but once in the three months, they also have a “pest animal” evening. Their products might not necessarily be organic certified as this certification means extra costs for the local producer. What we know about restaurant Moes, we have every confidence that they do buy ‘honest’ products.
We gave them points for their environmental consciousness, because of their interior. This is made of left-over building material, found in the neighbourhood. Unfortunately we do not have any information (yet) regarding how sustainably Moes is run in terms of electricity, water management, etc.
