The Movies

The Movies is the oldest cinema in Amsterdam and even of The Netherlands, dating back to 1912! This beautiful Art Deco cinema hasn’t lost any of its charm in all these years. From the outside it is not very special, but on the inside the cinema still breathes the atmosphere of the early 1900’s. Luckily they have maintained, but also updated some of the inside. The chairs are comfortable and the equipment modern.

Besides the beautiful Art Deco architecture and the charming atmosphere, we love the no-nonsense mentality in this cinema. This mentality is accompanied by a friendly service; especially in the restaurant. We can highly recommend you to have dinner in The Movies’ restaurant, TAVENU, first and make it a complete and romantic night out.

Cinema The Movies has four auditoriums with a total capacity of 400 seats. The restaurant is situated in the 17th century building next door, but can be accessed via the entrance of the cinema. When you combine a movie with a dinner, you get 10% discount on both the movie ticket as well as your restaurant bill. To book a movie ticket online, you have to register, but you can also call or pass by the theatre. The box office is open half an hour before the first movie showing.

Since September 2014 The Movies has a big, younger ‘sister’, when the Filmhallen opened in Amsterdam West. The Filmhallen has nine auditoriums and is located in the groovy De Hallen complex.
