Who says a conscious lifestyle is expensive has not heard of Stayokay hostels yet. Stayokay has three locations in Amsterdam of which Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark is getting ranked highest by guests. As the hostel room prices suggest, the rooms are basic. They offer various sizes dorm rooms, either mixed or single-sex rooms and private rooms. Prices include an organic buffet breakfast.

The hostel includes dorms with 4 to 10+ beds and private rooms from 2 to 6 beds. Each room has it’s own private shower and toilet. Bed linen is included in the price, towels are not. The hostel chain is in the process of refurbishing all it’s hostels with a “high-quality interior design concept that is modern and above all, warm and hospitable”, as they word it themselves. We have not (yet) been able to establish whether Stayokay Vondelpark has been refurbished yet.

A hostel in a listed building

Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark houses in a unique and remarkable building and on a wonderful location, next to the Vondelpark. The building from 1894-1895 in Chalet style, was built as a domestic science school. The architecture is very unusual for Amsterdam and is now a listed building. The hostel is right next to the Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s main city park and close to the main museums and Leidseplein (Leidse Square). Another little, nice-to-know, historical fact is that the Zandpad is the only remaining pre-urbanisation path of Amsterdam.

Next to the hostel in Vondelpark, Stayokay also has two other locations in Amsterdam: Stayokay Zeeburg (Timorplein 21, 1094 CC Amsterdam), which is slightly out of town and Stayokay Stadsdoelen (Kloveniersburgwal 97, 1011 KB Amsterdam), which is right in the old part of town.

Stayokay puts in a lot of effort to provide a sustainable stay

Stayokay hostels meet the requirements of the European Eco-label by separating waste, using sustainable energy and print on recycled materials, amongst other things. They stimulate and motivate their guests to be conscious regarding energy use and waste management. They even have ‘green ambassadors” who promote a more sustainable stay of their guests.

They use locally produced and seasonal products and organic and Fair Trade products as much as possible, such as the Fair Trade coffee. The hostel serves organic bread and meats with a Beter Leven [Better Life] quality seal and also offers vegetarian dishes at dinner.

On a social level, Stayokay supports several social projects and events.
