Filmhallen

The Filmhallen is the latest cinema complex to open in Amsterdam and is a fantastic addition to the art-house cinema scene in a city that loves it’s art-house cinema – whether it be high or low-brow. The Filmhallen is run by the same owners of one of our favourite movie houses, the art deco The Movies and consequently is a friendly, relaxed and well managed venue.

A diverse range of films for a wide range of tastes

With nine cinemas showing a range of art house, foreign language and “semi-blockbusters” The Filmhallen does an admirable job at offering an incredibly diverse range of films that appeal to a very wide audience. And they need to. As part of De Hallen complex, an incredibly successful inner-city reinvention of an urban space, it is a popular place to go for all cross sections of the community as well as travellers.

Modern and spacious, the auditoria at the Filmhallen offer possibly the best legroom of all cinemas in Amsterdam (if not the world!) as well as the handy cup-holders in the arms of their comfy seats. Considering they are housed in a former tram terminus, the acoustics are excellent. And of course they are all wheelchair accessible and easily accessible for the less abled. The bar serves a range of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks – including our much beloved Brouwerij ‘t IJ micro-brew beers! And of course as this is The Netherlands, you can take your alcoholic beverage of choice into the cinema with you. How very civilised.

The other thing I love about the Filmhallen is that they offer a very efficient online reservation system, where you can even choose your chairs of choice! Furthermore the Filmhallen are part of the “Cineville” system, where you pay a fixed rate of €19 per month to go to the movies at associated cinemas (pretty much every single art-house cinema and cinema of interest in Amsterdam!) as much as you like. Now as a local, movie lover, that simply cannot be beat!
