Description
Amsterdam Museum is the historical museum of Amsterdam and through its exhibitions, reflects the tolerance, enterprising spirit and individuality of our beloved city. The rich collection of works of art, objects and archaeological finds, brings to life the fortunes of ‘Amsterdammers’ of days gone by, and today. The museum is located in the heart of the city centre in a historical building with courtyards, the Civic Guards’ Gallery – filled with enormous 17th-century paintings – and a cafe-restaurant with a terrace in the courtyard.
THE museum to learn more about the Amsterdammers
Amsterdam Museum has several permanent and temporary exhibitions. The main exhibition – and the best to learn more about Amsterdam’s history and its inhibitants – ‘Amsterdammers’ – is Amsterdam DNA. In less than an hour the Amsterdam DNA exhibition offers a fascinating and concise overview of the history of Amsterdam through a very interactive exhibition. It is really nicely put together and stays interesting till the end, also for kids. Audio guides are available in various languages.
The Schuttersgalerij (Civic Guard Gallery), is a free accessible, covered little street between the Begijnsteeg and the museum. It is the only free ‘museum street’ in the Netherlands. Here you can enjoy group portaits throughout the centuries, from centuries old paintings of governors to contemporary photo portraits.
